Looking at the science of meditation and grounding and its health benefits. Plus 10 helpful tips on how to get started.
Firstly, why are so many people now taking to practicing meditation? What are the health benefits?
Much medical research has and is going into exploring the benefits of meditation, thus far research is showing that meditation helps with
- Lowering stress levels
- Reducing anxiety
- Promotes emotional health
- Enhances self-awareness
- Lengthens attention span
- Reduces memory loss (although the researchers have conflicting opinions at the moment)
- Inspires greater kindness and tolerance
- Can help with additions
- Improves sleep
- Can help to control pain
- Can reduce blood pressure
- Builds muscle strength
- It’s free and can be done by anyone, independently, anywhere.
Issues for the disabled community

Living life with a disability, comes with its own set of stresses, frustrations, limitations and emotional challenges. So it stands to reason that a therapy that is free, can be done independently. Addresses and assist with the core emotional and physical issues faced by a disability, would become a popular choice.
The down side is that many guided meditations use visualization techniques that involve evoking imagination of walking a deserted beach or climbing to the top of a mountain – things that a disabled person has never been able to or can no longer do, so they cannot identify with the visualization or worst case scenario feel frustrated by it!
Many able-bodied and disabled alike, get hung up on the technique, am I doing it right? For sure when you first start, no you won’t be… but Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will your ability to meditate properly, it takes practice and patience.
Persevere and the benefits far outweigh the few hurdles you may encounter.
Grounding
As part of the meditation practice you learn to anchor yourself – this is a point of concentration, whilst breathing. Learn to focus on the core of mother Gaia, by placing your feet flat on the ground and visualizing, by doing this you enhance the overall experience through what is called grounding or Earthing.
So what is grounding and why is it of importance?
Before we look closer at what grounding is, let’s brush up on our basic science. Remembering that everything is energy and thus everything emits an electromagnetic field. Also known as electromagnetic radiation EMF/ EMR respectively. The frequencies from these fields can be felt and absorbed by the human body, the reason being our bodies are conductive to electrical frequencies, it contains a large number of charged ions called electrolytes that live in the blood and surround the cells. When close to electrical equipment the electrons within the body start to vibrate, (you can test this with a multi-meter).
In the past, the small amounts of charge we absorbed, was easily discharged naturally through walking or relaxing in the sun. Earth and sunlight are both known to be natural electromagnetic fields having the effect of drawing the charge into themselves and neutralizing it.
Why it has become an issue in today’s society

Practically everything we have and use is electrical, so we are exposed to and absorbing much greater amounts of frequency. Added to the fact, few walk outdoors or relax in the sun, our bodies electrons are vibrating at a higher velocity and for an extended period of time, in some cases not discharging for days.
Emerging research shows that this has a real impact on both our physical and mental health. The velocity of vibration is thought to be a valid reason for cellular breakdown found in memory loss, inflammation of joints, headaches and migraines.
By using earth as an anchor within a meditation we are able to discharge these frequencies and return the body to its normal natural balance.
I would like to point out at this stage, that research is verifying that grounding helps with blood flow, improved muscle tone, faster muscle repair, pain reduction, improved sleep, better immune response, and heart rate variability.
Great natural benefits for all, specially for the disabled wheelchair community! Living life in a chair excludes you from discharging naturally. So it is imperative to recognize the real benefits of removing your socks and shoes and placing your feet flat to the ground. Add it to a meditation routine and you receive a double dose of natural healing.
Tips to get you started…
- Forget the need to be perfect, just enjoy it
- It doesn’t matter if your mind wonders – just come back to your anchor as soon as you realize
- Take deep breaths but only to the point that is naturally comfortable
- Whenever possible meditate outdoors
- Again whenever possible take your socks and shoes off – if you are in a wheelchair move the foot rest to one side
- Don’t try to meditate for long periods at a time to begin with 10-15 minutes will still be beneficial
- Doing mindfulness meditation which include positive affirmations will help with any anxiety or mild depression you may be experiencing
- Make a commitment to self to meditate daily for 30 days to begin with, I say this for two reasons, first you will start to see real benefits which will motivate you to continue and two you have to think of yourself as in-training just like going to the gym
- Enjoy the experience whilst benefiting your health. If 10-15 minutes causes stress cut it down. Do what feels comfortable and repeat twice a day, the results will be slower but results there will be.
- If you are really struggling to relax and remain focused then try a hypnotic mediation that helps you train the brain.
